At the VERY tail end of 2025 after rewatching Ready Player One, with Abby for the first time (me rewatching), I decided I wanted to read the book. With that one decision, I set off my reading journey, which consumed December 2025 to May 2026. I read 17 books and then I hit a couple of books that didn’t really connect with me, so I stopped. I didn’t want to stop and the intention was to start a new book but when I hit two “duds” in a row, it disappointed me after such a good run. But fear not! I have a plan to start back up again with some books I have in my “to be read” pile that are on my bookshelf. But first let’s step back and see worked and what didn’t.
I started pretty hard with Ready Player One, The Martian, and Ender’s Game. Then a friend from high school mentioned checking out Dungeon Crawler Carl… I read book 1 in four days, finishing it on Christmas Day. I was immediately hooked, but I told myself I wouldn’t burn through the entire series one after another because I wanted to find other books to read. With that, I moved on to Project Hail Mary, another great book. Then on to DCC book 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7… That’s right, I didn’t put other books between them and burned through all the books in print in less than two months (I read for 83 straight days at one point), while leaving myself with a three month buffer until book 8 was released in May. Next I read Armada, The Forever War, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Ready Player Two, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Then it was time for DCC book 8! However, after book 8 is where the wheels fell off. See those two books over to the right in the picture above? The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind and Discount Dan? They just didn’t do much for me. I tried, day after day, reading a chapter here and there, but after about 100 pages in, there wasn’t much drawing me back and I stopped reading anything in June! But, I’m ready! I’m ready to try some new books that have been sitting on my shelf. This weekend I’m going to start one of these two below.
I’d love to get your take on which one of these two I should try first. I think I will start with We Are Legion, but I could be swayed to the other book. I do have a third book in waiting, but I will leave that for a future post.
What book are you currently reading?
Based on what I’ve read and enjoyed, what books do you recommend?
From the books I have read, which one doesn’t seem to fit with the others?
Last but not least, do you know why I use DanGarion as my online name and did you know it was book related?
