Weekly Cool Links #14 – 1537 out of 1,000,000!

So the big news this weekend is the Orange International Street Fair!  I may be going there tonight with one of my brother in laws and a friend and then we will also be going Sunday afternoon like we have traditionally the last 4 years!  Really looking forward to the food and beer and fun of just having a good time.  Besides that not much happening, I accidentally left the freezer open 3 inches yesterday when I left for work, so I had to throw out all the food in the freezer!  It has been extremely hot at our house, usually 90+ degrees inside till nearly 9PM, we are still trying to figure out ways to cool our place down with just fans, it’s frustrating because it’s cooler outside but we can’t get the cooler air inside even with three fans throughout the house.  So that’s it for this week, now on to an abbreviated labor day weekend edition of Weekly Cool Links…!

First off with the start of the NCAA College Football Season I have to kick off my links with this awesome video.

USC opens their quest for the Division 1 championship on Saturday at 12:30 PM (pacific).  Talking about college football anyone that loves college football should really check out my friend Brian’s website, In the Bleachers, the #1 College Football blog and podcast in the world!

Food

Tactical Bacon, there for you when you need it!

Tactical Bacon, there for you when you need it!

I already know how to cook a whole chicken, but I’ve never cooked a whole one in a slow cooker, it’s a great way to get it done with minimal effort.  I’d also suggest checking out the main $5 dinner site, she does a great job sharing the wealth on the ways she’s able to make good cheap family diners.  Bacon is the coolest thing on the internet since sliced bread, and now you can make sure you are able to enjoy the salty smokey goodness of bacon during the next natural disaster with Tactical Bacon!  (thanks to my friend Dippy for the link).  And while you are eating your bacon, why don’t you learn how to cook up a bunch of hard boiled eggs in the oven… Wait are those oven cooked eggs?!

Interesting
According to Carnegie Mellon‘s Death Risk Rankings, the chances of a age 30-39, white, male, from California dying in the next year is 1,537 out of 1,000,000 (wait I fit that description!).  In addition here at the top 5 and the number out of 1,000,000.

Cause of Death – MicroMort
Total – 1,537
Accidents – 408
Circulatory system diseases – 187

Time Travel!

Time Travel!

I love this travel time-line that someone put together based on popular TV shows and movies (I’ve included to the left for those too lazy to visit the site.)  If you’ve ever wanted to check if your favorite user name is available at 130 websites all at one time, then namechk is the site to go.  Warning it could be used for both good and evil!  Good in the fact that you can find 130 websites to register your user name at, bad for the fact that you can find 130 websites to register someone elses user name at so they can’t!

Funny Stuff
Kelly and I are thinking about having a child…  Actually no we aren’t but what better way to bullshit your way out of work and responsibilities than the Office Kid, complete with pictures and drawings!  If having a fake kid isn’t your idea of funny then check out the People of Walmart a place to see pictures of those interesting individuals that shop the crappiest store on earth.

Tech Stuff
Just an FYI for those that keep sending me MMS messages to my iPhone, Sept. 25th is the big day that I will actually be able to see them from my phone!  About damn time AT&T!

And lastly I leave with you a couple more videos.

Pretty cool Old Spice commercial (I really enjoy their advertising and commercials)

College Humors modern take on West Side Story with Web Site Story!   I highly recommend checking it out!  You got to go to their site I can’t embed it.

Weekly Cool Links #9 – 006/26/09 – Brent Favre

Oh well, I wasn’t able to keep my weekly cool links weekly.  I just didn’t really have enough stuff to share last Friday.

First let’s start with personal stuff, I got a fraking ticket last Saturday!  Sad part is I didn’t even do what the officer said I did, oh well.  I’m contemplating fighting it in court, but I don’t even know if it’s worth it.  Our bathroom is almost done.  I know I keep promising pictures, and I keep meaning to post them, but I’m going to wait till it’s completed (which should after I get home from work on Friday).  We have also been working on getting the cabinet doors painted and hung up in the kitchen, we are about 3/4 of the way done after we were able to hang up 5 of the doors last night.  We are trying to get as much as possible done before our big 4th of July House Warming party that we are having next Saturday!  Many pictures will be taken and I’ll make sure I get them on here ASAP.  And lastly I’ve been doing my best to get my ass in shape the last three weeks by going for walks 3-4 times a week.  Last night I broke my current record by taking a 4.11 mile walk averaging 3.5 miles per hour.  I’ve been using a site called Trail Guru along with my iPhone to keep track of my adventures (Kelly has been going with me most the time as well).

Without further ado, I bring my weekly links.

First I’d like to pay tribute to one of my favorite quaterbacks of all time.OJbUXOfHLoi771fazAElUEpLo1_400 We really are going to miss you Brent! (from As Seen in WI)

Cool Websites
Moving on, have you ever wanting to make a decision but weren’t sure which way to go?  Then give the site Hunch a try, it will ask some questions about you (the more questions the better it knows you) and then it will attempt to help you have a decision.

Cool Tech
Windows was really in the news this week with the announcement of pricing for Windows 7 ($120-320 depending on what version), to be released on October 22, 2009.  The Home Premium upgrade will be $120 but if you act now you can get it for $50 on preorder, or if you act from now till the 28th you can walk into Micro Center and get a coupon to purchase it for $39.99 once it’s released!  Microsoft also released a beta version of the brand new Microsoft Security Essentials, which is basically a lite version of Anti-Malware / Anti-Virus software, good for those of us that don’t need the extras included in the pay versions of those types of software.  I’m using it on a number of computers already and find that it has a very small footprint, so far I like it and will be recommending it to friends asking for help.  Another thing I recommend to friends when they ask is Firefox.  Firefox is just about to have their next big update with the 3.5 version coming out very soon.  In the meantime I’m suggesting people check out the Lifehacker Firefox Add-on Packs, which will greatly improve your internet experiences.  I haven’t checked this piece of software out personally yet but if you are in need of heat mapping out your wireless network you might want to get ekahau Heatmapper out, it’s supposed to be pretty sweet.  And to wrap up the cool tech from the week, check out this USB Microwave that is in the works!

Cool TV
Those of you that know me, know I really enjoyed the Drew Carey show.  I’ve now started keeping up with him on his new blog, Drew From TV.  He has insights from The Price is Right, soccer, and from just life in general.  I’ve always liked Drew and he would be one of those guys I feel like I could just site down with and talk to for hours.  One of my favorite mini-series of all times was Band of Brothers, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg did an awesome job, and now I’m looking forward to their next World War II mini-series, The Pacific (click link for article and trailer).  This one has a very fond place in my heart since this where my grandfather fought, I can’t wait!

Cool Music
This guy took the time analyzing a bunch of data to figure out what bands have the most passionate fans.  It’s a pretty cool read, especially if you like numbers, and I’m happy to report my favorite band Jimmy Eat World is on his list, along with a couple other bands I enjoy.

Cool Games
I’ve heard a lot of really positive press about this game coming out for the Nintendo DS called Scribblenauts, sounds like a major breakthrough in games.  If PC gaming is more your thing, and you are cheap, then you might want to check out Download Squads list of the 25 best free cross-platform games.  There are some very solid games in the list, and best of all they are FREEEEEEEEE.

Cool Funny Links
Check out these amazing INTERNET SEX PHOTOS! – completely work safe!
Have you ever bought something via the internet (re:Craigslist) and were confused when the description was a little off?  Well check out Item not as described, which does it’s best to archive those items that just don’t really fit their description!

Cool Sports – Video of the Week!
I know it’s more like audio of the week, and I know I’ve posted this in the past, but sometimes you just gotta stay with what entertains you.

Weekly Cool Links #7 – 06.05.09 Edition

Another week in the can, and I’m actually doing my weekly cool links two Fridays in a ROW!!!!  Not much new on the personal front, was busy at work this week doing a new class, was enjoyable the first run but because of the content was a bit monotonous the second time through it, oh well that’s the nature of the beast when you are a trainer.  The bathroom is coming along, most of the drywall is up and the plumbing is all in, next week should see some real visible work completed and I’ll post more pictures.  The tomatoes are starting to ripen, so that’s progress!  Now on to the links!

This week I’m starting with all the technical stuff.  Windows 7 launch looks to be happening on Oct. 23rd.  Really looking forward to 7 especially now that they appear to be doing an upgrade program, according to this article on Engadget you will be able to get upgrade copies of Windows 7 for $50-100 bucks!  Now just to decide if I want to go to 64bit or stay with 32bit!  How about a search engine just for software and games?  That’s what Wakoopa is.  They can even recommend the best apps by looking at your daily usage and you can share your application usage with friends!  Do you use WordPress, just like me?  Well CSSJockey has came out with some new free themes that look to be more then just another theme, imagination.  Are you the type of person that wants to try to fix your tech gadgets or even take them apart and see what makes them tick?  Then iFixit’s Gadget Teardowns just migth be what you are looking for to figure it all out.

Ok on to the less technical, if you’d like to install some of the best free software out there onto your computer, take a look at the Lifehacker Pack 2009, which is a pretty good guide of free Windows downloads for both you and family members.  I have a close knit 7 or 8 websites I look at daily but sometimes I’m looking for more of what I already like, that’s when something like SimilarSites can prove to be very useful, unfortunately DanGarion.com and EatinOC.com aren’t popular enough to have sites they could recommend as similar, but Lifehacker does. Another specific search engine to check out is BMLet.com which is a bookmarklet directory, fills a need I suppose.

I got another link for us movie lovers, Flickchart lets you rank the best movies of all time, I’m waiting for my invite to check it out, but it looks promising, basically it make you have to choose between movies instead of just giving them ranks.

Don’t really have much in the “fun” department this week when it comes to links, but I’m sure the Tiny Toons episode below will entertain you.  This episode actually was on TV at least once because I remember seeing it, but probably not the best way to teach kids not to drink, especially considering the broad audience of this show at the time.

Here is another awesome video that was shown at E3 of the soon to be released Rock Band: Beatles, looks like I’ll be playing and singing a bunch of Beatle’s once it’s released!

Here is a pretty cool and funny one, Will Ferrell has come out with a sun screen line, that 100% of the proceeds go to Cancer for College charity.

You Can Look This Good!

You Can Look This Good!

But in order to really look that good you got to be in good shape, and as of right now I’m in a shape, but it’s the shape of round, so I’m contemplating trying one of those goofy challenges that have been so popular on the Internet.  The One Hundred Push Ups challenge…  Then maybe I’ll do the 5k/3Mile challenge, I don’t know, whatever I’m going to do I need to track it somewhere and I need some encouragement to get my fat ass in shape.  So post here and tell me to get my fat ass in shape!

And last, but definitely not least, I’d like to share with you my lovely readers Coed Magazines 52 Best Natural Breasts of All-Time, you heard that right one for every week of the year.  Personally I feel that #4 got short changed and should be #1, and #40, but that’s just me.  Tell me who you think got short changed!

Weekly Cool Links #5 – 05.15.09 edition

Oh well look at that there, my site has a new design. It’s still a work in progress but it’s a good start. So I was on vacation last week and didn’t get around to posting any new links, I don’t have a ton this week but I have a couple neat ones. Before I start the links a little about what’s going on. We’ve been working a bunch on the home still, we were able to get the garage all cleaned up and we also got a new garage door and opener installed, so now we park our cars in the garage overnight! Other then that the house is coming along great, I’m meeting with our contractor next week to finalize some stuff regarding our master bathroom and soon we will have two working baths! We got annual passes to Disneyland during our vacation (this isn’t the first time), so expect some posts about the park, and pictures from it eventually.  I’d love to hear what anyone thinks about the site redesign, it allowed me to make some nice personal headers (the top graphics) of things from the last couple years, I will be adding more.  Ok now on to the links!

I have a little bit of a perdicament, a year ago I registered the domain LetsGoDodgers and at first I was going to make a Dodgers blog, but I’m not committed enough to continue something like that, since I really do have a life outside of the internet.  The problem now is that I have 19 days to decide if I want to continue owning the domain, I think it could be a nice site to own and develop someday so I don’t really want to let it go, I even registed LetsGoTrojans sometime after that, but did even less there.  So I’d love to hear comments from anyone that reads this as to what I should do with either of those sites.

First off probably the best site I’ve found this week, thanks to Bill over at Dubious Quality for Awkward Family Photos!  There are some real gems there.  For those of you in California, thougth I would pull a oldie from my own links I like to visit, California Highways, can pretty much tell you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the roads we travel on here in the CA.

Kelly and I both enjoy watching Talk Soup and now after watching this preview for Community and I’m really looking forward to seeing Joel McHale (and even Chevy Chase) in the fall.

Here are some links I found through LifeHacker this week.  TrueCar will help you find out if the price you are getting for that new car is actually a good deal compared to what others are getting.  I can tell you we got a great deal on our G35 looking at the price of the new G37.  If you are looking for a book review site, you might want to check out Book Army, which will make suggestions basted on users with similar tastes of yours, I’ve signed up and will work on adding books, since I’d like to start reading more.

DUKE NUKEM IS DEAD! One of the biggest computer game stories of the century and yet it took me nearly a week to actually find this out.  3D Realms has closed for business.  “Shake it baby…”.

My webhost Dreamhost is having a wonderful special going on right now.  If you signup for webhosting using the promotional code ” SAVETHEDEVIL” you will not only get $50 off your signup but they will also donate $50 to the Save the Tasmanian Devil program.  All you have to do is click on this link to check out my host and use the promotion code, they are a great host that does great things.

Weekly Cool Links #3 – 04.24.09 edition

Well I skipped a week.  But I have good reason when I began thinking about last weeks WCL I realized I didn’t have much to share so I just decided not to save what I had for this week.  It’s been sort of a slow “cool” links period the last couple weeks, but I’ll share what I got.

First on the home front, Kelly and I have been working lots on the house, especially on the yard this past week.  We over seeding all the grass and are in the process of putting some topper soil over it all to help the new see grow.  In addition to that our tomatoes plants have really took off and we already have a bunch of tomatoes growing, soon enough we’ll be able to have our first taste of our first home grown tomatoes!

Back to the links.  USC Football linebackers made the cover of this weeks Sports Illustrated!lbs Looking forward to the NFL Draft this weekend and seeing where the former Trojans all go.

Macs never get viruses…. Right.  That’s why they are becoming zombie computers and doing DoS attacks due to a trojan that is infecting Macs.  Glad to see a programmer taking the time to show Macs aren’t perfectly safe either.  My webhost (Dreamhost) is offering TWO FREE YEARS of webhosting to the first 1000 Geocities customers that make the switch to a real webhost.  That’s a savings of $200 bucks!  And if you aren’t a Geocities customer you can still get great service and sign up for them from this link here (although it’s not free).

Google has a great new mobile version of their product search online now!  Specifically for iPhones and Andriod phones.  Looking forward to utilizing it while I’m out and about shopping.

My favorite computer magazine, Maximum PC just released an online article where they built a $500 Kick-ASS PC that can run Cyris at 40 FPS, pretty good bang for your buck!

Don’t forget about the big gay storm and the need for the super-umbrella!

Last couple things.  I was reintroduced to a card game that I used to love to play in high school called Tien len and just wanted to share it with everyone, it’s great for 3-4 players and simple to learn.  If you read through the rules I suggest to play with the alternate rule that you don’t have to match suits on pairs and straights because that just makes it a pain in the ass.  Just remember hearts are always the high suit!

And lastly, SAVE CHUCK!  Chuck has been one of my favorite shows to watch the past 2 years and it would be a disappointment for NBC to take such and good show off the air and continue to air crap like The Apprentice.  Come on NBC!  Go here and see what us fans can do to try and help Save Chuck!  I hate Subway and I might even end up eating it on the night of the season finale just to do my part to help the show.

Weekly Cool Links #2 – 04.10.09 edition

Echo (Dollhouse episode)
Image via Wikipedia

Ok another weekly links rounddup!  Wow 2 weeks in a row, almost as consistent as my nearly weekly posting over at Eat in OC!

So first something local, the guys over at Food Frenzy are asking What’s your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant around Orange County.  I chimed in about Tom’s Tacos in Stanton.

Game Booster looks like a nice all in one tool to use to get your PC ready for gaming.  If you know me well enough you know I love the new TV show Fringe, someone on the intarwebs has figured out that the symbols they show out to commerical actually stand for letters!  Talking about great TV shows, there was a story this week about Dollhouse being canceled because the 13th episode isn’t going to be aired, but now it’s said there has been no decision has been made, and the reason the 13th won’t be aired is just because it’s not part of the agreement with FOX…  I’m really hoping FOX picks both Dollhouse and Sarah Connor Chronicles, I’ve been enjoying them both.  Back to computer stuff, I’ve been testing out Subsonic, basically it’s an all in one media server/web server, pretty good and appears solid so far.

On to a link about Politics, the Universal Free Church has a petition to ban Mormon marriage, and although I personally wouldn’t want to go that far, their real stance is that they want to people to understand the difference of religious freedom and religious fascism.

On to some sports stuff, spring practice started for USC 2 weeks ago, and I forgot to include this picture…

USC Spring Practice!

USC Spring Practice!

Talking about sports my heart goes out to the friends and family of fallen Angel Nick Adenhart who lost his life way too early as a result of an idiot drunk driver.

And lastly, I’ve finally started to try and listen to podcasts on a regular basis, ever since KLSX went off the air I’ve been craving some talk radio.  So far I’ve been listing to TWiT, Maximum PC No BS, and Windows Weekly.  I’m sure I’ll find some more techcentric podcasts to enjoy as well.  Plus I’m a big fan of Leo Leporte.

Oh and last but not least, Google finally adds the ability to ad images inline to emails via Gmail!   YAY now I don’t have to do it the stupid way I was forced to when I send emails to friends!

Sorry no real cool and interesting links this week, more of a tech week for me.
