Weekly Cool Links #22 : The $499 Millennium Falcon!

Hey it’s that time again!  The links of the world, link or rama, link a dink a ding dong.  Yeah that wasn’t really funny.  So the last couple weeks were pretty busy.  On February 14th, my parents celebrates their 40th wedding anniversary, and impressive accomplishment in todays world.  Both Kelly’s parents and mine, are great role models to have.  Talking about Kelly and I, we celebrated Valentine’s day with dinner at Mr. Stox in Anaheim and then a night time trip to Disneyland.  Dinner was really good, I had their blue crab cakes and Kelly had the filet of steak.  This weekend we are going to our friend Sean and Amber’s for their daughters 1st birthday party, we haven’t seen them for awhile so that should be fun.  So that’s the update, now on to the links!  Oh wait one last thing, CONGRATS TO DREW BREES!

Food Stuff
For Super Bowl we had a small party with our parents coming over to watch the game with us, I wanted to try and cook buffalo wings, but wasn’t at all in the mood for frying them up, I found this awesome recipe two days before the game for cooking up crunchy buffalo like wings in the oven from Serious Eats, you owe it to yourself to cook them this way!  I also found this cool site that reviews all the interesting snack foods out there called Taquitos.net, they have everything from national brands to regional favorites.  Lastly if you are the type of person that is interested in trying your hand at brewing your own beer check out this quick blurb on Lifehacker about two free open source programs that will help you with your goal.

Music Stuff
I haven’t had much music stuff lately, but I had to share this awesome project that Michael Deal is working on that is a graphical exploration into the Beatles and the creation of their music.  This is a project and any true Beatles fan will want to check out.

Sad Stuff
For those that don’t know the Mars rover Spirit is stuck and can no longer move, so they have pretty much pulled the plug on the project, xkcd has a sad comic to show us that rovers have feelings too.

Funny Stuff
If you are a friend of mine on Facebook you might have already seen this, but if not, check out this graphic on How to Suck at Facebook.   I’m proud to say I don’t do any of those things listed, so I must not suck.  If you saw the Google commercial during the Super Bowl (which was my favorite ad) you saw a clever use of their auto complete feature, the site Autocomplete Me turns the auto complete feature into a interesting look at what people search for on Google.

Cool Stuff
I just found this today but I wanted to pass it on, someone has taken the initiative to educate today’s men on what they need in their wardrobe, with Newbie Fashion Tips for Grown Men.  It really is a good group of tips and suggestions on how to look your best.  Wardrobe Oxygen takes it a step further, but I have to disagree with some their what to remove from your wardrobe section.  I’ve been wanting to get some Lego sets recently to put together for fun and I was checking out the online Lego store, they have a $499 Star Wars Millennium Falcon, a little more than I want to spend (it is 5000+ pieces though)…  I’ve seen a couple places recently selling recycled bottles that have had their tops cut off so you can use them as glasses, here is someone that decided they could just make them instead.  Check out this great article on the 19 Most Complex and Dangerous road in the world, I’ve seen some of these on Top Gear, the Road of Death in Bolivia looks like a bitch.  If you know me you know that Kelly and I met online, so I find the research that OkCupid is doing on their dating site is extraordinary, they recently wrote an article about profile pictures, and I highly suggest anyone that is doing any sort of online dating read their articles, they will help you make a better personal ad.  Example, Men: don’t make eye contact and don’t smile, Women: make eye contact and a flirty face.  And the last of the cool stuff, this blog post regarding the changes to the Crayola color spectrum throughout the years.

Not Cool Sports Stuff
The Chicago Cubs have thought up an complete asshole plan, they are going to charge a 20% premium on those that purchase tickets the 1st week they are on sale, and then after that they will be the normal face value.  Talk about scalping your customers.  I hope we don’t see this become a trend.  (edit, this is nothing new they have been doing it for 8 years.)

Cool Videos
Some geeks have figured out an awesome use for Microsoft’s surface, Dungeons and Dragons!

D&D on the Microsoft Surface from CrunchGear on Vimeo.

Hot Tub Time Machine will be the movie event of the year!

Someone has edited all the violence from the 2010 Super Bowl commercials into one epic Youtube video.

And last but not least does this sound familiar?

Weekly Cool Links #21.1 Hello 2010!

Wow, here we are already nearly three weeks into the new year and I haven’t graced you all with the inaugural 2010 Weekly Cool Links.  I’d like to apologize to you, my fans and ask for your forgiveness!  But really, I had more important things to do the last couple weeks.  Like celebrate my birthday and take a vacation from work.  Kelly and I also celebrated our 5 year anniversary of meeting, last night.  We were going to go to dinner but due to the weather we stayed in and ordered delivery from the Chinese restaurant around the corner from our house.  After the weather cleared up we headed to the Starbucks at the circle in Orange (Orange Plaza) and had some coffee, just like we did 5 years ago when it was Diedrich Coffee.  Let me see if I can remember what else has happened the past month.

My new bike.

My new bike.

We celebrated Christmas at home, having two family Christmas parties, you might have seen the pictures from my previous post.  For Christmas Kelly got me and awesome bag for me to use for work, along with some cooking books I really wanted, a circular saw, and some clothing.  It was a really awesome Christmas.  For my birthday I got a new bike.

Raised vegetable bed.

Raised vegetable bed.

Kelly and I used my new saw and build two raised beds for our vegetable garden this year.  We’ve already planted some onions, and are waiting for March to add the tomatoes and peppers I get at the annual sale that Fullerton College has.  That just about wraps up most of the things we have done the past month.  So I guess it’s time for the Weekly Cool Links!  Just an FYI, there is a lot of stuff to share this week, so I’m going to do something different and break this up into a couple posts the new couple days.

Cool Stuff
Lifehacker put together a kick ass table of when is the Best Time to Buy Anything, from Homes in the winter (hey that’s what we did!) to Jeans in October, it’s a great list for those that are looking for when the best deals normally are.  You say you aren’t interested in buying anything, well how about these not so cool porn ideas (safe for work), don’t miss “The Making of You” staring Mommy and Daddy with special guest Uncle Bill…  I was going to post a bunch of “best of 2009″ links, but this guy did all the work for me, so I’ll just link to him.  I was hoping I would be on the 30 best blogs of 2009, but I guess I’ll have to wait for the 2010 list.  Continuing with the theme of lists, Gizmodo posted their list of the worst gadgets from the past decade, a lot fo great ideas but they just ended up sucking.

Cool Advertising
I have some American Apparel shirts (well they are shirts from places that print their shirts on AAs) and I’ve always been fascinated with their unique marketing strategy, from using porn stars to having androgynous looking models, they cover it all, which is why this collection of their hottest ads (possibly not safe for work, but nothing graphic) is included here.

Cool Food
One of the books Kelly got me (and my brother in law Dominic) was the 1st volume of the Good Eats books, by Alton Brown, I’ve loved reading the book and wanted to share this great Good Eats fan site (it’s poorly designed but still a great resource).  Talking about food, Lifehacker shared this article of Six Kitchen Skills You Can Pick Up This Weekend.

Cool TV
Chuck and 24 started up last week, Burn Notice starts tonight, and someone is selling a barely used late night show…  By the way even though I don’t watch much late night, I with Coco.

Cool Sports
The Hall of Very Good has some great stuff about good baseball players, that aren’t quite Hall of Famers, or shouldn’t be Hall of Famers.  I liked the guy, but Eric Karros should not have receive 2 votes for the Hall of Fame.

Cool Videos
I know he’s gone, but his trip to Seattle was delayed because of an annoying USC fan.  (I’ll miss you Pete!).

The Unaired 1994 Pilot of 24!

This reminds me of calls I get sometimes when Kelly is having an issue with the computer at home… ;)

All these guys are trying to do is be Helpful!

Stay tuned for Weekly Cool Links #21.2 tomorrow!

Oh yeah the Golden Globes were the past weekend, and according to the Internet these were the only globes being talked about…

I couldn’t wait for Friday to post this one.  This guy it’s pretty funny!

Weekly Cool Links #5 – 05.15.09 edition

Oh well look at that there, my site has a new design. It’s still a work in progress but it’s a good start. So I was on vacation last week and didn’t get around to posting any new links, I don’t have a ton this week but I have a couple neat ones. Before I start the links a little about what’s going on. We’ve been working a bunch on the home still, we were able to get the garage all cleaned up and we also got a new garage door and opener installed, so now we park our cars in the garage overnight! Other then that the house is coming along great, I’m meeting with our contractor next week to finalize some stuff regarding our master bathroom and soon we will have two working baths! We got annual passes to Disneyland during our vacation (this isn’t the first time), so expect some posts about the park, and pictures from it eventually.  I’d love to hear what anyone thinks about the site redesign, it allowed me to make some nice personal headers (the top graphics) of things from the last couple years, I will be adding more.  Ok now on to the links!

I have a little bit of a perdicament, a year ago I registered the domain LetsGoDodgers and at first I was going to make a Dodgers blog, but I’m not committed enough to continue something like that, since I really do have a life outside of the internet.  The problem now is that I have 19 days to decide if I want to continue owning the domain, I think it could be a nice site to own and develop someday so I don’t really want to let it go, I even registed LetsGoTrojans sometime after that, but did even less there.  So I’d love to hear comments from anyone that reads this as to what I should do with either of those sites.

First off probably the best site I’ve found this week, thanks to Bill over at Dubious Quality for Awkward Family Photos!  There are some real gems there.  For those of you in California, thougth I would pull a oldie from my own links I like to visit, California Highways, can pretty much tell you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the roads we travel on here in the CA.

Kelly and I both enjoy watching Talk Soup and now after watching this preview for Community and I’m really looking forward to seeing Joel McHale (and even Chevy Chase) in the fall.

Here are some links I found through LifeHacker this week.  TrueCar will help you find out if the price you are getting for that new car is actually a good deal compared to what others are getting.  I can tell you we got a great deal on our G35 looking at the price of the new G37.  If you are looking for a book review site, you might want to check out Book Army, which will make suggestions basted on users with similar tastes of yours, I’ve signed up and will work on adding books, since I’d like to start reading more.

DUKE NUKEM IS DEAD! One of the biggest computer game stories of the century and yet it took me nearly a week to actually find this out.  3D Realms has closed for business.  “Shake it baby…”.

My webhost Dreamhost is having a wonderful special going on right now.  If you signup for webhosting using the promotional code ” SAVETHEDEVIL” you will not only get $50 off your signup but they will also donate $50 to the Save the Tasmanian Devil program.  All you have to do is click on this link to check out my host and use the promotion code, they are a great host that does great things.

Weekly Cool Links #2 – 04.10.09 edition

Echo (Dollhouse episode)

Ok another weekly links rounddup!  Wow 2 weeks in a row, almost as consistent as my nearly weekly posting over at Eat in OC!

So first something local, the guys over at Food Frenzy are asking What’s your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant around Orange County.  I chimed in about Tom’s Tacos in Stanton.

Game Booster looks like a nice all in one tool to use to get your PC ready for gaming.  If you know me well enough you know I love the new TV show Fringe, someone on the intarwebs has figured out that the symbols they show out to commerical actually stand for letters!  Talking about great TV shows, there was a story this week about Dollhouse being canceled because the 13th episode isn’t going to be aired, but now it’s said there has been no decision has been made, and the reason the 13th won’t be aired is just because it’s not part of the agreement with FOX…  I’m really hoping FOX picks both Dollhouse and Sarah Connor Chronicles, I’ve been enjoying them both.  Back to computer stuff, I’ve been testing out Subsonic, basically it’s an all in one media server/web server, pretty good and appears solid so far.

On to a link about Politics, the Universal Free Church has a petition to ban Mormon marriage, and although I personally wouldn’t want to go that far, their real stance is that they want to people to understand the difference of religious freedom and religious fascism.

On to some sports stuff, spring practice started for USC 2 weeks ago, and I forgot to include this picture…

USC Spring Practice!

USC Spring Practice!

Talking about sports my heart goes out to the friends and family of fallen Angel Nick Adenhart who lost his life way too early as a result of an idiot drunk driver.

And lastly, I’ve finally started to try and listen to podcasts on a regular basis, ever since KLSX went off the air I’ve been craving some talk radio.  So far I’ve been listing to TWiT, Maximum PC No BS, and Windows Weekly.  I’m sure I’ll find some more techcentric podcasts to enjoy as well.  Plus I’m a big fan of Leo Leporte.

Oh and last but not least, Google finally adds the ability to ad images inline to emails via Gmail!   YAY now I don’t have to do it the stupid way I was forced to when I send emails to friends!

Sorry no real cool and interesting links this week, more of a tech week for me.

News You Can’t Use…

Bill Buchanan
Image via Wikipedia

So they killed off Bill Buchanan on 24!!!!  One of my favorite characters of all time besides Jack Bauer, very sad too see Bill is never going to be on the show again, but love that they killed him off as a hero dying for his country.

We are growing a vegatable garden in the backyard, I’ve planted 8 tomato plants and 2 types of peppers, will be interesting to see how that works out, I’ll take some pictures tonight and post them.

Also on top of all this we got a PS3 and along with it I bought MLB ’09 the Show, pretty fun game!

Oh and they came out with a Jimmy Eat World, Rockband 2 trackpack!  Three more Jimmy Eat World songs to play on my Xbox 360!
