Weekly Cool Links #3 – 04.24.09 edition

Well I skipped a week.  But I have good reason when I began thinking about last weeks WCL I realized I didn’t have much to share so I just decided not to save what I had for this week.  It’s been sort of a slow “cool” links period the last couple weeks, but I’ll share what I got.

First on the home front, Kelly and I have been working lots on the house, especially on the yard this past week.  We over seeding all the grass and are in the process of putting some topper soil over it all to help the new see grow.  In addition to that our tomatoes plants have really took off and we already have a bunch of tomatoes growing, soon enough we’ll be able to have our first taste of our first home grown tomatoes!

Back to the links.  USC Football linebackers made the cover of this weeks Sports Illustrated!lbs Looking forward to the NFL Draft this weekend and seeing where the former Trojans all go.

Macs never get viruses…. Right.  That’s why they are becoming zombie computers and doing DoS attacks due to a trojan that is infecting Macs.  Glad to see a programmer taking the time to show Macs aren’t perfectly safe either.  My webhost (Dreamhost) is offering TWO FREE YEARS of webhosting to the first 1000 Geocities customers that make the switch to a real webhost.  That’s a savings of $200 bucks!  And if you aren’t a Geocities customer you can still get great service and sign up for them from this link here (although it’s not free).

Google has a great new mobile version of their product search online now!  Specifically for iPhones and Andriod phones.  Looking forward to utilizing it while I’m out and about shopping.

My favorite computer magazine, Maximum PC just released an online article where they built a $500 Kick-ASS PC that can run Cyris at 40 FPS, pretty good bang for your buck!

Don’t forget about the big gay storm and the need for the super-umbrella!

Last couple things.  I was reintroduced to a card game that I used to love to play in high school called Tien len and just wanted to share it with everyone, it’s great for 3-4 players and simple to learn.  If you read through the rules I suggest to play with the alternate rule that you don’t have to match suits on pairs and straights because that just makes it a pain in the ass.  Just remember hearts are always the high suit!

And lastly, SAVE CHUCK!  Chuck has been one of my favorite shows to watch the past 2 years and it would be a disappointment for NBC to take such and good show off the air and continue to air crap like The Apprentice.  Come on NBC!  Go here and see what us fans can do to try and help Save Chuck!  I hate Subway and I might even end up eating it on the night of the season finale just to do my part to help the show.

Weekly Cool Links #1 – 04.03.09 edition

This is a little something I’m going to try.  Share news stories and interesting things I found on the Intarweb this week.

First off let’s start with an interesting discovery that workers are 9% more productive when they get some free time during work to browse around the internet.  I’ve been a big supporter of this since internet was enabled at my work and I’ve personally felt the effects of this with me.  It lets me get my mind off work and refresh.  Lifehacker has a round up of all their “Best of the Best” votes they’ve had since January, it’s a great list of useful programs and internet places to get things done (everything from people searches to browsers).  Want to see if your username is available on a multitude of websites (social networking and etc.) all at one time, well then check out Namechk.  And in the same sort of tone, there is Domain Search for checking domain names.  Gizmodo reports that the QuickPWN team has already released a Jailbreak for iPhone 3.0 Beta, I won’t be checking it out, since I’ll wait till the official 3.0, but glad to see they are well ahead of the release.  Oh and lastly, from OC Weekly’s Navel Gazing Blog the Universal Free Church has launched a proposal to ban Mormon marriage, in an attempt to bring awareness to religious freedoms and religious free speech.  I’ll be signing the petition because I believe that no religion has the right to push their agenda on anyone else, but I’m sure most of you already knew that’s how I feel.

Anyway, I’ll try to do this weekly, or monthly, or as often as I can remember and get time for.  Expect a personal update later.

iPhone Video!

2 Years

So next Tuesday is our 2 year anniversary.  We are going to San Diego to celebrate.  But in addition to just going to San Diego we are going to be attending Comic-Con on Sunday!  Should be a fun day of people watching and checking out cool geeky things.

I jailbroke my iPhone last night and it’s working flawlessly so far, made a couple little cosmetic tweaks to the interface but the good programs aren’t online yet.  I also found a CTU ringtone for my phone!

Waiting for our iPhones...

So let’s begin our story on Friday the iPhone launch day…  I got off work a bit early and while I was driving home I stopped by an AT&T store only to find out that they didn’t have any more iPhones in stock.  I went home and ate my lunch and then called Kelly to see if she wanted to try our luck after she got off work.  I headed over to our dog grooming shop to help her clean and wait for all the customers to pick up their dogs.  We then headed to the Apple Store in Costa Mesa at the South Coast Plaza.  I had been checking updates regarding how busy stores were throughout Southern California and this particular store was never mentioned and although I know it’s one of the biggest malls in California I decided we would check it out.  To our disappointment there was a line, a very very very very long line.  One that I came to find out was well over 4 hours long, so we went home defeated instead.  Then on Saturday I dropped Kelly off for work and after getting some breakfast and having my cars oil changed I decided to check out the line for the apple Store again, since it wasn’t supposed to open till 10.  I discover what appears to be a long but managable line, probably about 100 people deep, one of the workers predicted about a 2 hour wait, which wasn’t bad but I wasn’t sold on it yet.  As I walked back to my car I called Kelly and asked her if she thought I should wait and she said yes.  So i went back to the line, now 105 people deep and proceeded to spend 5 hours in line slowly making my way to iPhone heaven.  Fortunately I had great linemates both in front and behind me who i talked with all 5 hours as we stood and waited.  Let me say that again…. 5 HOURS! A lot longer then I expected.  While in line Apple Store reps offered us free coffee and also they shared information and answered any questions they could.  After about 1 hour of wait (an moving 5 feet) one of the reps came out told anyone that had a discount on their bill that they might have issues getting an iPhone today and that the wait could be 4-6 hours if that was the case.  I had called AT&T earlier in the week to make sure everything would be fine on my account and they said it wouldn’t be a problem, but just to make sure I immediately cancled my discount to make sure I had no issue once I reached the store.  The experience was a bit frustrating but I have to give it to the Apple Store in SCP they really did all they could themselves to make the experience somewhat plesant.  So now both Kelly and I are proud owners of 3G iPhones.  I have to admit I really love this phone so far.
