Social Media Experts

Social Media Marketing Madness Cartoon by HubSpot

I’ve been on the Internet for about 14 years now.  I remember using the Mosaic browser, and even Lynx.  I’ve seen lots of trends come and go.  I’ve usually been close to the cutting edge when it comes to the “next big thing” on the Internet.  One of the biggest trends on the Internet lately is the number of people who claim they are Social Media Experts.  If there was ever a completely overused term for the 2009 version of the Internet it is this term.  From my observation those that claim to be social media experts are so just because they make the claim.  I’ve been on the Internet, interacting socially with others for years.  I’ve had various forms of blogs for 9+ years, used messengers, chat rooms, MMORPG, and etc. for years, thus my experience has to count for something, especially when compared to these people who all of the sudden claim they are the experts.

From my observation of the users of Twitter, just about 10% of its population claim to be a social media expert.  I find it humorous that so many people are claiming to be experts in social media.  First let us look at what Social Media is.  According to Wikipedia.

Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction, using Internet- and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers.

What you are reading right now (my blog) is a social interaction, it’s highly accessible at a domain that I’ve owned for 9+  years, and it’s scalable since I can easily expand upon it.  I allow social interaction, by the way of comments, which allows others to add their input to the information I share, and I’ve become a content producer because of this.  So if I read this definition correctly, I’ve done everything “social media” is for nearly 9 years, which in turn would probably make me an expert in the field.  How many other social media experts can claim this much experience?  Don’t answer that question it’s not really important.  I guess my main point is what makes someone an expert in their field?  In most fields it comes down to experience (hands on actually doing it day in day out experience) or certifications (book knowledge but no actual usage).  I don’t know of a Social Media Expert certification so it comes down to experience.  Experience isn’t having a couple thousand followers on Twitter, anyone can honestly do that, with a couple minutes of work a day.  I have only 160 followers on Twitter because I’ve chosen the path of not automatically following everyone that follows me.  This is an active decision I’ve made because I like to communicate personally with the people who follow me.  The creation of lists on Twitter appears to be my chance to finally expand my followers-base.  I can no separate people I follow into those that I want to personally communicate on a whatever my time frame is basis, and those that I just want to disseminate content to.

I wasn’t looking to actual make a point, just share my thoughts on the current state of Web 2.0 and the Social Media Expert explosion.  This is Daniel Schoonover Social Media Expert extraordinaire saying, don’t sell yourself short, but also don’t oversell yourself.

I’m not the only one to have ever said this.  Open Press Wire has a great article about it as well.

Weekly Cool Links #14 – 1537 out of 1,000,000!

So the big news this weekend is the Orange International Street Fair!  I may be going there tonight with one of my brother in laws and a friend and then we will also be going Sunday afternoon like we have traditionally the last 4 years!  Really looking forward to the food and beer and fun of just having a good time.  Besides that not much happening, I accidentally left the freezer open 3 inches yesterday when I left for work, so I had to throw out all the food in the freezer!  It has been extremely hot at our house, usually 90+ degrees inside till nearly 9PM, we are still trying to figure out ways to cool our place down with just fans, it’s frustrating because it’s cooler outside but we can’t get the cooler air inside even with three fans throughout the house.  So that’s it for this week, now on to an abbreviated labor day weekend edition of Weekly Cool Links…!

First off with the start of the NCAA College Football Season I have to kick off my links with this awesome video.

USC opens their quest for the Division 1 championship on Saturday at 12:30 PM (pacific).  Talking about college football anyone that loves college football should really check out my friend Brian’s website, In the Bleachers, the #1 College Football blog and podcast in the world!

Tactical Bacon, there for you when you need it!

I already know how to cook a whole chicken, but I’ve never cooked a whole one in a slow cooker, it’s a great way to get it done with minimal effort.  I’d also suggest checking out the main $5 dinner site, she does a great job sharing the wealth on the ways she’s able to make good cheap family diners.  Bacon is the coolest thing on the internet since sliced bread, and now you can make sure you are able to enjoy the salty smokey goodness of bacon during the next natural disaster with Tactical Bacon!  (thanks to my friend Dippy for the link).  And while you are eating your bacon, why don’t you learn how to cook up a bunch of hard boiled eggs in the oven… Wait are those oven cooked eggs?!

Time Travel!

Time Travel!

I love this travel time-line that someone put together based on popular TV shows and movies (I’ve included to the left for those too lazy to visit the site.)  If you’ve ever wanted to check if your favorite user name is available at 130 websites all at one time, then namechk is the site to go.  Warning it could be used for both good and evil!  Good in the fact that you can find 130 websites to register your user name at, bad for the fact that you can find 130 websites to register someone elses user name at so they can’t!

Funny Stuff
Kelly and I are thinking about having a child…  Actually no we aren’t but what better way to bullshit your way out of work and responsibilities than the Office Kid, complete with pictures and drawings!  If having a fake kid isn’t your idea of funny then check out the People of Walmart a place to see pictures of those interesting individuals that shop the crappiest store on earth.

Tech Stuff
Just an FYI for those that keep sending me MMS messages to my iPhone, Sept. 25th is the big day that I will actually be able to see them from my phone!  About damn time AT&T!

And lastly I leave with you a couple more videos.

Pretty cool Old Spice commercial (I really enjoy their advertising and commercials)

College Humors modern take on West Side Story with Web Site Story!   I highly recommend checking it out!  You got to go to their site I can’t embed it.

Dear Maxim Magazine…

Thanks a lot for helping me decide to not renew my membership with the most recent issue of Maxim Magazine.  Including an advertisement cover that is not only an ad, but also cannot be easily removed without destroying the rest of the magazine cover is the last straw for me.  I’ve been a subscriber ever since the first issue and I’m sorry to say, my last issue will be arriving sometime next year, when I let my subscription expire.  I understand that the majority of your revenue is from advertising sales, but selling out your subscribers for a sorry excuse of a cover is just plain shit.

Digital Television Delay?!?!?

Gah these people in government are complete morons.  Why would they delay just because 6.5 million people are lazy bums that procrastinate.

Anyway enjoy the followup updated video about the DTV transition.

Fresh & Easy family parking

Fresh & Easy family parking

Ok, today I rant about the stupid parking spots they have at Fresh & Easy. I love Fresh & Easy for the most part. They have a pretty good selection of food, a nice meat section, some decent prepared foods, and it’s right around the corner from our new home… But the one thing that absolutely ticks me off about them is their stupid inclusion of “Family” and “Hybrid” car parking spots.

Fresh & Easy hybrid parking

Fresh & Easy hybrid parking

I mean WTF? These spots are some of the stupidest things out there. I first noticed them a couple years back at Ikea, and now here they are at a grocery store. I purposely use the spots when I shop there, since there is no law that allows them to enforce them. I’m honestly thinking on writing to them and complaining to them about how these spots probably put off more customers then they help. Come on Tesco (the company that owns Fresh & Easy) wise up and remove the useless excluded parking spots. Stop trying to be hip or cool by showing love towards families or hybrid car owners, and just show equal love to ALL your customers.  I still don’t understand what gives companies the notion that anyone deserves to have closer spots then anyone else…

HAHA! THEY GOT US! – Politics

I Hate Politics

The problem with politics; the root of the problem with all political parties and with political candidates is that instead of choosing the best person normally I’m stuck with having to choose the least bad person for the job.  Look I’m a responsible adult that tries to make the right decisions when it comes to my career, my life, and my investments, I don’t feel I have the need to be baby-sit and have my hand held throughout my life by the government.  It’s the government’s responsibility to protect me, not to take care of me.

I’m not looking for handouts, I don’t feel that the government has an obligation to me to provide health care, bail me out of bad financial investments, nor give things I want free.  I do think people that make more money should pay more taxes.  Look if you are making millions of dollars you can afford to pay more taxes, sure it sucks, but that’s the price of being successful in our society.  I do think the government needs to look out more for the people of the USA then they do for the companies of the USA.  I have very conflicting views that travel the full gamut of political parties.  I love the environment and believe we should do a lot more then we currently do to protect it.  I feel that our immigration laws should be enforced, not because I hate people that are different, but because I want people that are willing to endure the difficult process of becoming an American citizen, instead of those looking for a free ride (it’s a privilege not a right).  I’m all for people coming here for a better life, but you got to do it the right way.  Children up to the age of 18 deserve great education, because they are our future of the US, preschool should be mandatory from around age 3, and there should be wide improvements in the infrastructure of the US educational system, up to high school.

All investment in corn as a fuel should be stopped and more research should be taken into more efficient ways of the production of fuels (there are types of grass that are less expensive and much more efficient).  All government subsidies should be removed.  Abortion should be legal for any pregnant woman, but at the same time there should be strict guidelines on what reasons and when.  Religion has no place in laws, period.  People that get married and or have children should not get tax breaks.  In fact people that have children should have to pay more taxes.  Oh by the way, I don’t care if you are straight or gay, you deserve to be married to the person you love regardless of your sexual orientation.  Marriage is not a religious concept.  If religions want to call it something else, more power to them, but a marriage is a marriage and that’s what the government should recognize it as.

Companies shouldn’t be able to lobby the government to make things illegal because they might compete with their business.  This is a free market as long as the item isn’t going to be deadly to my health it should be legal (not to say all substances should be legal, but things like stevia were illegal for years for no apparent reason).  Talking about legal substances, marijuana should be legalized and taxed.  But being under the influence of it should be illegal at times, just like alcohol.  I could probably go on and on, but I’d continue to make too much sense if I do.
