Weekly Cool Links #12, 08.10.09 edition – An MBA in 2 Minutes!

So I failed!  I’ve failed to get my weekly cool links out at least every other Friday!  Flog me if you want, but I have a good excuse.  I was very busy last week with work and in turn wasn’t able to prepare my links for release by Friday, so here I am releasing them on Monday instead.  Last week I was was in training Tuesday through Friday with a contractor from Hill’s and Associates doing the Time Warner Cable Business Class certification courses.  Even though I pretty much knew everything about our business class product, it’s still good to get a refresher every so often.  Plus now I know even more about our services and probably about 150 more acronyms about networking and the telecom industry…  In addition I spoke to the trainer during one of the breaks about some career advise, because I’m looking for some more technical training and discovered some certifications from (ISC)² that I’m researching and possibly will be taking the exam for (the SSCP first) and then studying for more.  In addition to that he taught us everything you learn in MBA school and officially gave us all MBAs…

MBA in 2 Minutes

1. Revenue – Costs = Profits
2. Businesses without customers are not in business
3. You must do everything you can to attract and retain customers

Besides work not much happened the last couple weeks, we had a couple various family gatherings, a relaxing 1 week vacation, and saw a couple movies.  Funny People (3 Stars) and 500 Days of Summer (3.5 Stars) you can check out my movie reviews here (more reviews to come as I catch up!).  Lastly I’m getting into golfing and bought some new irons last week, that should be arriving at my house today and I’m looking forward to playing 1-2 times a month if possible.

On to the Weekly Cool Links!!!!

Music
I have a bunch of music links this week, most of them about finding new music, something I struggle with because of my specific eclectic preference.  I’m always interested in finding more music I might like, iTunes DOES NOT CUT IT with their recommendations, even Genius is just sort of ok, but Lifehacker put together an article on articles and ways to help, with their Top 10 Tricks for Making Your Playlists Rock.  There is Project Playlist which can help you find music, generate playlists and create ringtones for you.  Lastly if you are looking into turning an old computer into a “media server” you might want to check out Amahi, doesn’t require much power or high priced tech to get running, and can stream to just about anything, in addition is has lots of features that compare to those of Windows Home Server!  And lastly, I thought I would share an artist I discovered yesterday, this girl can do wonders with just a ukulele and has a very pretty voice.  She is also playing in Long Beach in a week or so.

Movies
Not much on the movies front this week, but how could we all have missed the production of Lesbian Vampire Killers!  Most of the reviews say it’s pretty bad, but come on with a name like that it has to be at least entertaining.

Sports
orel-hershiserI found this gallery archive of Iconic Dodgers Photos from Sports Illustrated.  My favorites include the picture of Sandy Koufax’s no hitter, if you look closely on the chalkboard someone wrote and then erased that he went 0 for 4 in the game.  Also love the picture of two of the best pitchers ever in baseball, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax.  Glad that they included one of my favorite Dodger of all time, Orel Hershiser.

TV
If you happen to know anyone that is looking for a job, perhaps Veridian Dynamics might be just the place.  Well regardless if it is, I highly recommend that you check out the two episodes of Better off Ted that will be on this week (Tuesday 08/11/09 at 9:00 P.M.).  Or maybe you are like me and you just accidentally want to somehow download all the TV shows you are interested in so you can watch them later on your own time and without advertising… Well ShowRSS might be able to help you out…

Tech
If you don’t know by now, both myself and Kelly have iPhones, and one way I keep up with the release of free applications I might want to check out is by visiting FreeAppAlert, actually I have them on my Twitter, but I check out their website via their feed there.  Talking about the iPhone I’m really stoked to see that the FCC is interested in getting to the bottom of the application approval process at Apple after their denial of the Google Voice app.  I was really looking forward to getting to use my Google Voice number, hopefully these questions that the FCC has made will get Apple and AT&T to stop with the antics.

Neat Stuff (probably tech oriented)
Did you know that my relative and US President John Quincy Adams is tweeting?!!?  It’s all being done by the Massachusetts Historical Society, as this article explains.  J.Q.A. kept a 1 line a day journal 200 years ago while he traveled to Russia to be the first US Ambassador to Russia.  According to my calculations he’s currently just off the coast of Canada make his trek to Russia.

On to present day, I really thought this graph by the New York Times showing how people spend their day was interesting.  I love the data that have put together and the ability to filter through it and see some specific groups.  For those of my friends that enjoy beer, and especially Miller Lite, they are soon to release some new draft technology to be used in the home.  This one should probably be in the tech section, or maybe I should just make an iPhone section, but someone has come out with software that allows one to track what is in their pantry and allow it to link with their iPhone to help create shopping lists and keep your pantry items up to date.  With the integrating of the pantry list on your computer you can have an automated shopping list that updates to your iPhone pantry list!

Local
Joanna_Angel That’s right I have a local section, but not much to report.  OC Register posted a list on Certified Farmers Markets throughout Orange County, although it doesn’t include the one in Stanton on Mondays (unsure if it’s a certified but I could have swore it was), also check the comment section for most lists.  Lastly, Gustavo Arellano at O.C. Weekly wrote about an article he read in a Jewish satire magazine, in which porn star Joanna Angel praises the sausages from Mattern Sausage in Orange for, “Its curved shape was good for hitting my G-spot and, because it was a smooth surface, it was also great in my ass.”  If that’s not a praise for their sausage then I don’t know what is!  What Gus didn’t mention is that there is actually an article and pictures of Jenna von Oy from Blossom fame!!!

Videos

Ladies, is this what it has come to?  What extracurricular activity does the Shake Weight resemble?

Are all the people in Santa Cruz like this, or is their something wrong with the water?

Don’t forget the Aspray next time you have issues with your body odor.

And lastly I had to include this awesome time-lapse video of Disneyland construction, it’s amazing how quickly they were able to do stuff back then, compared to the time it takes today.

Have a great week!

Weekly Cool Links #4 – 05.01.09 edition

Wow, talk about a cool links week. I got so much stuff to share it’s going to take me all night to write this post! First off let’s start with my picture of the week.

Space Shuttle - 747 Mount

Space Shuttle - 747 Mount

So it was a really busy week for links I added a new tool to assist me in collecting everything I want to share. Hopefully someone is reading this and finding something worthwhile, other then my wife Kelly (hi sweetie).

They have found what was killing off honey bees!  Very cool that they have found the cause and the cure for the honey bee population, this is a very big deal.  Bees might scare people but they are very important to our lives and the ecosystem.  I haven’t used this yet since I haven’t gone on a trip recently but if you need help packing you might want to check out Packwhiz, which helps you figure out what to take for the type and length of trip.

If you use Netflix to get your movie fix like we do then check out FeedFlix which will aggregate all your NetFlix data and tell you how much you really are paying for that 3 movie subscription that you only use 2-3 times a month!  Just check out mine, we slacked for a number of months because of our move so now it’s time to play catch up. I found out about Feedflix via Leo Leporte at TWiT.

If you are into Twitter, then check out Tweeting Too Hard, a website all about people that appear to be trying to hard on their Twittering (hopefully I’m not on there!), I suggest you check out the All-time Top.  I found this link courtesy of Net@Night one of my favorite podcasts to listen to.

Let’s check out some sports stuff from around the internet.  The tennis community is all a buzz about a girl that might end up being the next Anna Kournikova, her name is Simona Halep and you can be the judge if she might be the next big bust in tennis.  As my close friends can tell you I’ve never really thought Anna was all that the majority of the sports community (read: men) tried to push.  There are two new baseball games to check out from the internet, first one is the Massive Multiplayer Online – MMobsaeball, you can play it right through your browser and basically all you do is train your player and the website does the rest.  It’s gone through some major growing pains since it’s beta launch 2 days ago, so expect more until they work those out.  The next baseball game is Perfect Game 2009, brought to you from the home of text baseball Germany!  I don’t know what it is but those Germans love to make baseball simulation games.  Lastly if you didn’t get the press release the Lingerie Football League is a GO and kickoff is slated for 09.04.09!  Now to just figure out what team I like the most…

A couple tech things I read this week.  Windows 7 will have a Virtual Windows XP mode, there was some talk that users would have to have a copy of XP for it to work but that has been denied.  This will be a big push to get companies to move up to 7 I think, looking forward to the release (although I have been a big fan of Vista, haven’t had any issues).  Talking about Windows, ReactOS which is a operating system built from the ground up to be like Windows but also be open source has reached a milestone with the .3.9 release.

I also have a question to anyone that is still out there reading this, what recent PC game should I buy?  I see that Steam has Left 4 Dead priced at only $24 bucks this week and I’m wondering if I should get that or something else  like Demigod (the Maximum PC guys have been talking about that on their podcast).

And lastly, videos of the week!  I have three to share but only one I will actually post here on the site.  The Hunt for Gollum is a Tolkien fan production that looks like it might be pretty good once completed.  Check out how huge memory was back in the 50′s with this video of Mercury Delay Line Memory.  And lastly I leave you with the funniest thing I’ve watched all week from the Fine Brothers it’s a Lost parody that they make with action figures!

Have a great weekend!  I’m on vacation next week so I’m not sure if I will have much to share, but I’ll see what I come up with!

Weekly Cool Links #2 – 04.10.09 edition

Echo (Dollhouse episode)
Image via Wikipedia

Ok another weekly links rounddup!  Wow 2 weeks in a row, almost as consistent as my nearly weekly posting over at Eat in OC!

So first something local, the guys over at Food Frenzy are asking What’s your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant around Orange County.  I chimed in about Tom’s Tacos in Stanton.

Game Booster looks like a nice all in one tool to use to get your PC ready for gaming.  If you know me well enough you know I love the new TV show Fringe, someone on the intarwebs has figured out that the symbols they show out to commerical actually stand for letters!  Talking about great TV shows, there was a story this week about Dollhouse being canceled because the 13th episode isn’t going to be aired, but now it’s said there has been no decision has been made, and the reason the 13th won’t be aired is just because it’s not part of the agreement with FOX…  I’m really hoping FOX picks both Dollhouse and Sarah Connor Chronicles, I’ve been enjoying them both.  Back to computer stuff, I’ve been testing out Subsonic, basically it’s an all in one media server/web server, pretty good and appears solid so far.

On to a link about Politics, the Universal Free Church has a petition to ban Mormon marriage, and although I personally wouldn’t want to go that far, their real stance is that they want to people to understand the difference of religious freedom and religious fascism.

On to some sports stuff, spring practice started for USC 2 weeks ago, and I forgot to include this picture…

USC Spring Practice!

USC Spring Practice!

Talking about sports my heart goes out to the friends and family of fallen Angel Nick Adenhart who lost his life way too early as a result of an idiot drunk driver.

And lastly, I’ve finally started to try and listen to podcasts on a regular basis, ever since KLSX went off the air I’ve been craving some talk radio.  So far I’ve been listing to TWiT, Maximum PC No BS, and Windows Weekly.  I’m sure I’ll find some more techcentric podcasts to enjoy as well.  Plus I’m a big fan of Leo Leporte.

Oh and last but not least, Google finally adds the ability to ad images inline to emails via Gmail!   YAY now I don’t have to do it the stupid way I was forced to when I send emails to friends!

Sorry no real cool and interesting links this week, more of a tech week for me.

News You Can’t Use…

Bill Buchanan
Image via Wikipedia

So they killed off Bill Buchanan on 24!!!!  One of my favorite characters of all time besides Jack Bauer, very sad too see Bill is never going to be on the show again, but love that they killed him off as a hero dying for his country.

We are growing a vegatable garden in the backyard, I’ve planted 8 tomato plants and 2 types of peppers, will be interesting to see how that works out, I’ll take some pictures tonight and post them.

Also on top of all this we got a PS3 and along with it I bought MLB ’09 the Show, pretty fun game!

Oh and they came out with a Jimmy Eat World, Rockband 2 trackpack!  Three more Jimmy Eat World songs to play on my Xbox 360!
